I watched Wreck-It Ralph the other day as a way to procrastinate, and also because I was intrigued; I’ve heard a lot about it (especially on Tumblr, haha) and it looked pretty good so I gave it a go.

In general I enjoyed the film. I’d give it a good 7/10. But there was one thing that has been on…

Disagree hugely on the ‘Turbo is a one note villain’ thing. Not saying his actions were correct or just, of course but here’s how I see it.
There are huge holes in his backstory and personality. We know next to nothing about how he was before the incident nor what happened in the ten years between then and Sugar Rush being plugged in.

He could’ve been a perfectly nice guy. He could’ve been awful.

Here’s the thing though. He’s the protagonist of his own game and he ends up as the villain of the story which ties into what you’re saying about people not being one dimensional. And it all began with his decision to game jump into Roadblasters to take them out.

It was a purely impulsive decision, however. Maybe afterwards he would’ve regretted getting them unplugged once he thought about what he’d done. Who knows? We’re only ever given second hand information so we can’t really say for sure what his motives were either.

What he had no intention of doing however, was getting his own game unplugged. So he’d certainly regret that. Considering the way the scene was set up, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that everyone involved in the incident is now dead. So now no matter how much he regrets what he did, he can’t ever take it back, make up for it, or apologise. Ever.

It was considered so awful by the other game characters that they coined a term out of it, accuse anyone who even simply expresses a desire for something more as “going Turbo” and is remembered to this day by all who were around when it happened. It’s not a leap to assume that he became widely hated and despised for his actions.
Hence why he had to hide away. Alone. For ten years.

Then Sugar Rush gets plugged in and he sees his chance to start a new better life. And we don’t know what happened when he took over Sugar Rush, but we are shown that he tried to delete Vanellope in a rage so who knows what happened there? I’m not saying this is a good thing, or excuse what he did, I don’t think Vanellope deserved that, I’m just sayin’.
We also don’t know what happened during the fifteen years he was ruling Sugar Rush. Was he trying to capture her the whole time? Did he only start looking to throw her in jail when she actually stood a real chance of crossing the finish line now that Ralph was assisting her? Can’t say.
But note that when he finally did capture her, he simply locked her up rather than attempt to execute her.

So now let’s address the Random Roster Race scene.
His motives seemed pretty clear to me. It’s not “Oh em gee, she’s going to cross the finish line before me”, it’s “Oh no, she’s going to cross the finish line and I’ll lose everything” just like he did with TurboTime.
Whether he got on with the Turbo Twins or not, he is thriving in Sugar Rush in a way that he never did in TurboTime. This is his home now. He doesn’t want to give that up. He also doesn’t want to stop being King Candy who everyone loves and go back to being Turbo who everyone hates.

He is not evil for the sake of being evil. But he tries to fix things by breaking more things and that’s what makes him the villain.
